I have lived within sight of the Dartmoor National Park for most of my adult life. Typical of many photographers I have always looked into the distance and neglected what is right in front of me. So I have set myself an ongoing project – To Photograph Dartmoor, and produce a portfolio of photographs I can show locally and online. In this gallery you can see some of the black and white images that have been produced so far.
Photographers local to Dartmoor always comment on how difficult a landscape it is to capture; barren and featureless with dull flat light and unpredictable weather. Black and white photography can be used to navigate a way through these obstacles and in many situations use the unpredictability of the weather, and compose stark graphic shapes of windblown trees, granite tors and the remains of what was once an industrial landscape against the back drop of the barren moorland.
